A dental air polisher is a professional device used in dental prophylaxis and biofilm management. It delivers a controlled mixture of compressed air, water and a fine cleaning powder onto the tooth surface. The combined jet removes biofilm, soft deposits and extrinsic stains — including those in pits, fissures, interproximal areas and around orthodontic appliances or implants.
Air polishing has become a routine part of modern hygiene visits and structured prophylaxis protocols. Depending on the system and the powder used (sodium bicarbonate, glycine, erythritol, calcium carbonate and others), it can be used supragingivally for stain removal or subgingivally for periodontal and peri-implant maintenance.
Most systems on the market are used by dentists, dental hygienists and prophylaxis assistants in private practice, multi-chair clinics and dental service organizations.
The seven brands compared by dental clinics today, listed alphabetically without favouritism. Each has different strengths in workflow, ergonomics, powder compatibility and total cost of ownership.

Not exactly. Dentsply Sirona Cavitron Prophy Jet is a specific product. "Prophy jet" is also used informally as a generic term for air polishing systems, but the market includes many distinct systems — EMS AIRFLOW, Acteon Air-N-Go, Hu-Friedy PWR Air, NSK Prophy-Mate neo, W&H Proxeo Aura, Woodpecker air polishers and others.
Reference ranges in April 2026 (ex-VAT EU): W&H Proxeo Aura ~€400–€600; Hu-Friedy PWR Air ~€1,800–€2,200; EMS AIRFLOW Prophylaxis Master €6,400–€8,000; EMS GBT Machine ~€9,166. Country, distributor, configuration, training package and financing change the final number — request an itemised quote.
A 2024 randomised controlled trial in BMC Oral Health found GBT non-inferior to conventional scaling and root planing (6 weeks: 77.9% vs 80.1% pocket closure; 3 months: 84.1% vs 84.4%, non-significant). The 2022 Hatz et al. umbrella review concluded air polishing with low-abrasive powder jets is comparable to conventional instrumentation in active periodontitis and advantageous in supportive periodontal therapy, but not advantageous in active peri-implantitis. GBT is one structured approach, not a clinically superior alternative.
No. Subgingival air polishing requires fine, low-abrasion powders (typically glycine or erythritol) and a dedicated nozzle that can be safely introduced into the periodontal pocket. Not all systems are designed for subgingival use.
No. Air polishing is a clinical technique used in many prophylaxis protocols. Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) is one structured protocol developed and trademarked in the EMS ecosystem; many clinics use air polishing without formally adopting GBT.
