Two handpiece-style air polishers, both plug into your existing high-speed coupling, both deliver supragingival biofilm and stain removal. The differences are subtle — distributor depth, coupling support, subgingival options. The decision often comes down to which manufacturer has the stronger presence in your country.
Both are excellent handpiece-style air polishers for clinics that already own a scaler and want to add air polishing without committing to a tabletop or cart unit. Choose by:
| Dimension | NSK Prophy-Mate neo | Acteon Air-N-Go |
|---|---|---|
| Manufacturer | Nakanishi Inc. (NSK), Japan | Acteon Group, France |
| Form factor | Handpiece + powder chamber on coupling | Handpiece + powder chamber on coupling |
| Supragingival | Yes | Yes |
| Subgingival | No — separate Perio-Mate handpiece | "Air-N-Go Perio" version available with subgingival nozzle |
| Powders | FLASH pearl (bicarbonate), SOFT pearl (glycine) | Acteon glycine, sodium bicarbonate |
| Couplings | NSK + standard four/six-hole | Standard four/six-hole + Acteon |
| Build / weight | Light, ergonomic, Japanese precision feel | Light, French engineering |
| Protocol fit | Step 1 of NSK MIT | General prophylaxis workflow |
| Price tier (capital) | Mid | Mid, often slightly lower |
| Global distribution | Very strong — NSK is a top global dental brand | Strong in Europe, more variable globally |
| Best fit | NSK-aligned operatory, periodontal-heavy with Perio-Mate pair | Acteon-aligned operatory, routine prophylaxis focus |
Brand consistency in the operatory matters more than people think. Shared service contracts, shared training language, shared part suppliers. If your scaler is NSK, the Prophy-Mate neo slots in naturally. If your scaler is Acteon Newtron or Acteon Sopro, Air-N-Go is the natural sister product.
If yes — NSK is the cleaner path because the Perio-Mate handpiece is a dedicated subgingival device that pairs with the Prophy-Mate neo as a complete supragingival + subgingival range. Acteon's "Air-N-Go Perio" version covers subgingival but is a different SKU/configuration — confirm with the distributor exactly what's quoted.
NSK has very strong global distribution — most major dental markets have an NSK distributor with deep technical support. Acteon is strongest in Europe (France, Italy, Spain), variable elsewhere. Ask both distributors specifically: service SLA, loaner during repairs, powder stock locally vs imported, training delivery.
Both handpieces work on standard four-hole or six-hole couplings. NSK additionally supports its own quick-coupling system. If you have non-standard couplings (older operatories, mixed brands), confirm compatibility before ordering. Adapters work but add cost and a small failure risk.
Both run glycine and sodium bicarbonate — no erythritol (that's an EMS-only powder in Europe, see erythritol vs glycine). NSK's FLASH pearl (sodium bicarbonate) and SOFT pearl (glycine) are well-stocked globally. Acteon's powders are stocked through Acteon distributors — confirm local availability before committing.
Powder consumption is broadly comparable between the two devices for a given chairside workflow.
NSK has a reputation for Japanese precision build quality, especially on handpieces — bearings, balance, durability. This shows in their pricing (slightly higher) and in customer satisfaction surveys. Acteon's handpieces are well-engineered French products; quality is high but the build-quality reputation is less dominant than NSK's at the top of the handpiece market.
For high-volume operatories where the device runs all day, the marginal build-quality difference matters over a 5-year lifespan. For lower-volume clinics it's largely indistinguishable.
If you don't own a scaler — neither handpiece-style polisher is the right call. Look at a combined tabletop unit instead: Woodpecker PT-E, NSK Varios Combi Pro2 or EMS Airflow Prophylaxis Master.
If you want a standalone tabletop (your own scaler stays in place but you want a dedicated polisher box rather than a handpiece) — look at the Woodpecker AP-H.
