Woodpecker PT-B

Last reviewed: May 14, 2026 · By DentalAirPolisher Editorial Team

The Woodpecker PT-B is the built-in counterpart to the tabletop PT-E — same combined ultrasonic scaling + air polishing, integrated inside the operatory cabinet rather than sitting on the cart. Independent overview for clinics specifying new builds, refurbs and full operatory rebuilds.

Quick facts

What is the Woodpecker PT-B?

The Woodpecker PT-B is Woodpecker's built-in counterpart to the PT-E tabletop unit. Same combined functionality — piezoelectric ultrasonic scaling plus chair-side air polishing — but with a different physical form factor. Instead of a tabletop device you place on the cart, the PT-B installs inside the dental unit or operatory cabinet, with handpieces emerging through the standard chair-mounted tubing.

The PT-B is a specification-time decision: you're choosing it when you build a new operatory or refurb an existing one. Retrofitting a PT-B into an operatory that wasn't designed for it is more involved (water, air, electrical integration) and significantly more expensive than buying a tabletop PT-E.

Who typically buys the PT-B?

PT-B vs PT-E — which one fits your operatory?

The two devices share their core engineering: ultrasonic piezo scaling, glycine + sodium bicarbonate air polishing, the same handpiece family. The decision is about where the box lives:

If you already own the PT-E, switching to the PT-B usually doesn't make sense as a standalone investment — it's a decision to make at the operatory-build moment. See the PT-E overview for the tabletop equivalent.

Powders and consumables

The PT-B runs the same powder family as the PT-E — glycine and sodium bicarbonate on the air polishing module. The Woodpecker-branded "Super Powder" sold in Europe is a glycine formulation, not erythritol. Erythritol is patented by EMS in the EU and not validated on Woodpecker hardware. If your hygiene protocol calls specifically for erythritol, the PT-B is not the right device — look at the EMS Airflow Prophylaxis Master or the newer GBT Machine instead.

Ultrasonic tips for the scaling module follow Woodpecker's piezo tip range. Confirm tip compatibility with your existing protocols before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

Can I retrofit the PT-B into an existing operatory?

Technically yes, but it's significantly more expensive and disruptive than buying a tabletop PT-E. Most clinics that decide on the PT-B do so at the new-build or full-refurb stage.

Is the PT-B subgingival-capable?

Subgingival capability depends on whether the SKU includes a validated subgingival nozzle and the right powder. Confirm in writing with the distributor before purchase — don't assume it's included.

Can I use erythritol powder in the PT-B?

Not in Europe. EMS holds the European patent on erythritol air polishing powder. Outside Europe, confirm with the local distributor what powders the SKU is validated for.

How long does PT-B installation take?

Depends on whether you're doing a new build (typically same-day, as part of the chair installation) or a retrofit (1–2 days plus reassembly). Ask the distributor for an installation timeline up front and what operatory downtime to plan for.
